Did you choose a career in insurance or did you fall into the industry like so many others? Briefly share your story.
Insurance chose me! I left the British Navy to come back to South Africa and start a worm farm. It was an idea that I had stumbled on in Wales, where they export Japanese worms across the globe. Whilst I was looking for the perfect location, I needed a job. So, I started working as a clerk for a marine UMA and since then, I have never looked back.
Why did you choose to enter The Insurance Apprentice?
I was chosen to enter The Insurance Apprentice (through an Insurance Institute of Kwa Zulu Natal – IIKZN workshop). I did not know much about the competition at the time, then I found out it was a personal growth endeavour and that appealed to me.
In your mind, what qualities should an ambassador of The Insurance Apprentice have?
A passion for building and growing relationships, A high level of professionalism, leadership skills, the ability to receive or accept advice, the ability to communicate effectively with varied audiences and to be a team player.
Who has been the biggest influencer on your career and why?
I have been very fortunate to have various influences in my professional career, especially the senior elements of the companies I have been privileged to work at. At the end of it all, my Mother has been my biggest influence. She has been in the industry for over 35 years and her experience and guidance has been invaluable. If I ever have a query or a claim that is worth debating she is my first port of call. If she cannot help, then she would point me in the right direction
In a tweet of 140 characters explain why insurance ROCKS!!!
Insurance is the ultimate sleeping pill, by purchasing insurance you are safe guarding your business and family from the uncertainties.
What would be your dream Apprentice task and why?
It would be a task where you would directly be able to provide a service to a group or community in need.
What song would you choose for your Insurance Apprentice victory dance and why?
Firstly, I cannot dance. But for the sake of the question I would choose LMFAO – Party Rock Anthem ft. Lauren Bennett, GoonRock – You do not dance to this song, you shuffle.
A message to all the TIA sponsors?
I would like to say a very big thank you to all the sponsors involved in The Insurance Apprentice from start to finish. You have all played a massive role in getting this competition off the ground and running. Without your support this competition, which is providing such a valuable tool to upskill the future of our industry and advertise it to the outside world, would not be able to run.
How important is winning for you?
I think winning is not as important as the journey. Having said that, I am fiercely competitive in pretty much everything I do, and I prefer being a winner than a competitor.
Advice to yourself about what you should remember and focus on as you are going into the competition.
I think it is important for me to be me and not try to be what I think people want me to be. Be yourself, relax, smile and don’t forget to enjoy the experience.
